Each of my mosaics has a story behind it - the devoted biker, the daydreamer, the icon holding a menu, the artist in a field of creative energy, moonlight and the sea….
Creating a mosaic is a very intuitive process. Other than deciding on the size of the work, and marking the placement of my subject within that space, nothing else is pre-plotted. As I contemplate my subject and gain a fuller understanding of what I’m trying to convey through it, I begin to prepare the wood with my first impressions of color and texture. My “palette” usually consists of natural, dyed and painted woods, and a variety of metal leaf and mica powder.
A natural rhythm happens as I move throughout the work, spontaneously creating shapes, which become patterns, giving every section of the mosaic interest. A completed mosaic consists of hundreds of intricate pieces, each scribed and cut on a band saw. The shapes I create are curved, flame-like, wavy, and interlocking - always inspired by Nature’s exquisite designs. This is a very exciting, demanding but thoroughly satisfying process that is full of infinite possibilities!
