The paintings in this series began about 10 years ago with stones I gathered from the shores of Findhorn in Scotland. Back home, I placed them on a shelf in my studio and there they sat for a year or two with other things I collected. One afternoon, sunlight raked across the beach stones and through some glass spheres that were next to them. The utter beauty and simplicity of these ordinary objects - the beach stones worn smooth by time, and the crystal clarity of the glass – felt new and yet timeless, and was profoundly moving.
Since then, I’ve discovered a spiritual iconography emerging in my work as I include natural elements: stones, bamboo, thorns, pods, bones, and rusted tools – in compositions with glass spheres. I refer to these paintings simply as Meditations and have titled each of them with feelings they evoke for me. Several years after beginning this series I came upon the Japanese aesthetic of “wabi-sabi” and immediately felt a familiarity - I think it best describes my work.
